Most of the patients who conceive after successful fertility treatment are worried about what the future pregnancy entails for them. Since the process of achieving pregnancy with treatment can seem far removed from “natural” conception, some women worry that this difference will continue into the
pregnancy. The heightened awareness of the woman to her pregnancy further contributes to her fears and insecurities.
During the first few weeks the women undergoes more intensive monitoring and is on pregnancy support medications than a “natural pregnancy”. However, after the first few weeks, an IVF pregnancy is the same as a “regular” pregnancy in every respect. Every woman and every pregnancy is unique, no matter how the baby is conceived.
Pregnancy after IVF conception is may seem to be associated with some increased risks and complications. These risks don’t seem to be directly caused by the use of fertility treatment. Instead, they are more likely associated with the original reason IVF was needed in the first place—infertility or advanced age.
Prenatal care is always important, but it’s especially important after IVF to hopefully catch these complications early and treat (or prevent) them as soon as possible.
