Infertility checkup/workup & counseling

Couples who have not been able to conceive even after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse need to visit an infertility specialist. A couple may need to seek help earlier, i.e,,after 6 months of trying if age of women is above 35 years or there is a predisposing cause for infertility . A proper initial workup for an infertile couple is crucial as it gives the couple the opportunity to select the right kind of fertility treatment.

Workup and investigations
The infertile couples must go through a set of pretests before the commencement of any treatment. These tests are comprehensive & relevant and are essential to determine the causes of infertility, whether the couples are diagnosed with any other symptoms and which process would be the most suitable for a particular couple.
Female partner must go through trans-vaginal ultrasound to checkout ovarian reserve & uterus condition, few blood tests etc. They also need to undergo tubal patency tests via ultrasound (sonosalpingogram) or radiograph (hysterosalpingogram). Laparoscopy or hysteroscopy may be required in cases where there is a requirement for relevant diagnosis.

Male partners need to go through a semen analysis to acknowledge the quality & quantity of their sperm, motility or whether there’s any dysfunctionality .Blood tests can be done if required for diagnosis.
